There are some areas of the San Diego area where freeways and development haven’t completely filled in the open space. Sorrento Valley is surprisingly one of them. Much of the valley floor is undeveloped open space, where the hills to the east are filled with commercial buildings.

The BNSF/SDN Railway (Coaster/Amtrak) runs through the middle of the valley. Sorrento Valley Road also runs through the valley. South of Carmel Mountain Road, it is a four lane divided roadway with bike lanes. North of Carmel Mountain Road to Carmel Valley Road it is closed to motor vehicles. The roadway was a through road until flooding closed it for an extended period in the late 1990’s. It was converted to a bike path in the mid 2000’s. Sorrento Valley Road makes a good connector to Carmel Valley Road and the SR-56 Bike Path.
