State 133 formerly ended at I-5 until being extended to SR-241 in 1998. The highway is four lanes or more from SR-241 to SR-73. In 2003, the road was upgraded to an expressway from the 405 to the 73. In the process, a large section was bypassed. The old alignment through upper Laguna Canyon is slowly returning to a natural state. Future plans call for safety upgrades, possibly extra lanes, from the 73 to Laguna Beach.

Because of the odd angle 133 crosses I-5, the ramps are greatly spread apart.
