Ridge Route – Templin Highway

Original route with the intersection of Templin Highway to the left.

Templin Highway was built as an access route to the Castaic Power plant in 1968. The power plant is a part of the California State Water Project. It was that project that caused the rerouting of US 99. The road was originally called Warm Springs Road and was planned to be a connector road as far east as Spunky Canyon Road, though originally only as far as Lake Hughes Road. It was renamed in 1967 after N. H. Templin, a Los Angeles County Highway Commissioner.

Before Templin Highway was built, the Ridge Route continued on a level path across here. Looking up, one can see some of the concrete that was bulldozed.

This is the last intersection until State 138. There are no gas stations until Gorman which is another 35 miles north of here. Traveling south, Castaic is only 7 miles from here. I-5 can also be accessed here, to the west along Templin Highway.

At the present time, through travel along the Ridge Route is not possible as the roadway is closed and gated 1.4 miles north of this point.
