This road is a good alternate to Hwy 56 and Hwy 78 to get from I-5 to I-15. The central portion follows the San Dieguito River until Lake Hodges Dam, after which the road heads north to Escondido. Via Rancho Parkway, just past Lake Hodges, offers a shorter connection to I-15 instead of going through Escondido. Del Dios Highway is quite popular with bicyclists as it has a wide bike lane and offers good connections to towns on either side.
