Kanan-Dume Road (multiple tunnels)

Built: 1975 to 1982
Location: Between Truinfo Canyon Road and State Hwy 1

USGS map showing all three tunnel sets along Kanan-Dume Road. Tunnels T2 and T3 are located adjacent to Ballard Mountain north of Mulholland Highway. Tunnel T1 is located just south of Newton Canyon.

Three sets of tunnels, originally built as single tunnels, were constructed along Kanan-Dume Road during a period of road building funded partly as an “atomic warfare escape route” should Los Angeles be bombed. This, of course, never happened but the region still did benefit from these roadways. Most of the tunnels along Kanan-Dume road are one-lane wide and were twinned in the early 1980’s.
