Here, Sierra Highway crosses beneath Southern Pacific’s Colton Cutoff. It was built in the 1960’s to bypass Los Angeles and Soledad Canyon. The base of operations for the Southern Pacific was also moved from Taylor Yards near Downtown Los Angeles to West Colton near San Bernardino at this time. This section of Sierra Highway was originally paved in 1921. The freeway bypassed it in 1966.
