The small “town” of Little Lake is now mostly abandoned but used to be a stop along old US 6. In 1966, the town was bypassed by one of the first segments of expressway along US 6/395. The lake rests in the ancient bed of the glacial Owens River.  Lava flows in this area were formed over 40 kya and help produce some of the more interesting geologic features in the area.
