Independence is the county seat of Inyo County. The Eastern Sierra Museum is also located here. State 180 was supposed to originally end here, coming over Kearsarge Pass and coming down Onion Valley Road. No roadway was built between Roads End on the west side in Kings Canyon and Onion Valley on the east side.
