At Sandy Summit, US 6 begins to pass through a more geologically interesting area. Volcanoes, which may have last erupted approximately 15 kya, run from here to Blackrock Summit. The area is known as the Lunar Crater Volcanic Field and is home to many cinder cones, maars, and lava flows.
