At Sandy Summit, US 6 begins to pass through a more geologically interesting area. Volcanoes, which erupted between 6 Ma and 35 ka, run from here to Blackrock Summit. The area is known as the Lunar Crater Volcanic Field and is home to many cinder cones, maars, and lava flows.
