This section of US 99 was first constructed in 1915 as a narrow, concrete, two lane road. It was widened to a four lane highway in 1939. It was later modified and slighty modernized in 1949. Finally in 1962, Union Avenue was entirely bypassed to the west by the present freeway. Union Avenue was then redesignated Business SR-99.
