San Fernando is a small city that was founded in 1874 and is the oldest city in the San Fernando Valley. US 99 followed San Fernando Road through town until 1950, when it was split into two one-way roadways. Truman St carried northbound traffic and San Fernando Road carried southbound traffic. This split lasted until 1964 when the two roadways were returned to two-way traffic after I-5 bypassed this segment in 1963. US 99 also met State 118 at Brand Blvd to the south and Maclay Ave to the north.
