The North Burbank UP marks the only mainline railroad crossing on US 99 through the San Fernando Valley. Here, San Fernando Blvd passes two frontage roads and the Southern Pacific Saugus Line (now Metrolink). Prior to its completion in 1942, the old crossing at Empire Ave was known as the “Turkey Crossing” and was the site of many collisions. In May 2014, the roadway was closed for good, to be replaced with a new crossing to the south at Empire Avenue. As a result, San Fernando Blvd is no longer a through route. To get through today, use Lincoln St to connect from Empire Ave to San Fernando Blvd.
