Southern California is known as the birthplace of hang gliding. The earliest flights for modern hang gliding took place along the beach near El Segundo in the late 1960’s. Mountain flights started near Kagel Mountain as early as 1969 at Kagel Mountain above Sylmar, California in the northwestern San Fernando Valley. Kagel Mountain, among other locations, remains quite popular to this day.
