State 118 begins as a four lane conventional highway at the Santa Paula Freeway (126) in Saticoy. Soon after crossing the Santa Clara River, the road narrows to two-lanes. 118 remains as a two-lane road, passing through mostly agricultural lands near Somis. From Somis to Moorpark, the road follows the former Southern Pacific Coast line, now Union Pacific / Amtrak / Metrolink line.

At Moorpark, it widens to four lanes again. After passing through Moorpark, State 118 gets onto a freeway which then heads east to I-210. The freeway was built from 1968 to 1980 and was extended to Moorpark in 1993 to connect with the 23 freeway. HOV lanes run from Rocky Peak Road to I-5.
