Basin and Range – Owens Valley

Cartago was founded in the late 1800’s as a port town along Owens Lake. Many steamboats left this port to deliver or recieve supplies from Keeler and Swansea on the other side of Owens Lake. Those towns are located along present-day State Highway 136.
