Lone Pine was founded around 1865. It also is the home of the first traffic signal on old US 6 since Mojave. Whitney Portal Road, the location of the signal, is the gateway to Mt. Whitney – 14,494′. It is the highest peak in the lower 48 states.

North of Lone Pine, US 395 has been widened to a four-lane expressway and a short section of split alignment. The northbound lanes between the 1872 earthquake grave site and the Alabama Gates of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, are the original alignment. Southbound, while curvier than the northbound lanes, were added in September 1999.

In 1948, a short section of original alignment was bypassed between Moffat Ranch Rd and just north of the Los Angeles Aqueduct bridge.
