Chalfant marks one of the last gas stations in California along US 6, the last being in Benton. Chalfant is a rural farming and ranching community with only a small store as shown in the photo above. The original alignment followed Valley Road to Brown Subdivision Road. In 1936, the roadway was shifted onto the current alignment. The road was realigned at Hammil, to the north, in the same year. There, the original alignment followed Hammil Road to Black Rock Mine Road.
