1930’s view of Gavin Canyonj looking southerly toward the future location of the I-5 Gavin Canyon bridges.
The Old Road here was a four lane divided highway. This section of highway was completed in 1930 as a three-lane road and was widened to a four lane expressway in 1951. The expressway was originally paved with concrete but it was paved over in 1994 when this section of highway was used as a temporary freeway during the reconstruction of I-5.

Shown here, I-5 crosses the Old Road in Gavin Canyon. In 1994, these bridges partially collapsed during an earthquake and have been subsequently rebuilt.
In 1968, I-5 was completed through Gavin Canyon, bypassing this section of US 99.
