Historical Tour of old US 99
Union Avenue / SR-223: Business SR-99
Bear Mountain Blvd
This section of US 99 was first constructed in 1915 as a narrow, concrete, two lane road. It was widened to a four lane highway in 1939. It was later modified and slightly modernized in 1949. Finally in 1963, Union Avenue was entirely bypassed to the west by the present freeway. Union Avenue was then decommissioned to Business SR-99. SR-223 is known as Bear Mountain Blvd. It runs directly towards Bear Mountain, a prominent feature in the skyline to the east. That highway also links US 99 with former US 466 (SR-58)
