This highway may have carried the last western section of former US 80 for a few years. Mostly a busy city street, after passing into the Point Loma Naval Base, the road offers scenic vistas of the San Diego area and Coronado. It was decommissioned in the early 2000’s though signage remained until around 2014 in many places, including I-5 and I-8.

  1. California Route 209 SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RELINQUISHED. It serves Federal lands, military reservations, naval facilities, coast guards bases, a national cemetary, a national park and carries a heavy volume of traffic the far exceeeds the City’s responsibility. The highway is a historic route of national significance (La Playa Trail) and connects multiple national historic landmarks. It was a mistake for the City to accept responsibility for the highway. Caltrans needs to repossess aquire the right of way and restore the original route to full State maintenance. This will benefit tourism and assist motorists/visitors in navigating the historic and scenic route to the attractions on Federal land, as well as the Cabillo National Monument, a major destination and popular unit of the National Park Service at the end of Point Loma
