This is a rather scenic highway, at least south of State 166. The first few miles of this highway are freeway, constructed in the 1950’s and 1970’s. The section from Hwy 166 south to Ojai was built in the 1930’s and still retains a few bridges from that period. Through Wheeler Gorge, State 33 passes through three tunnels, two of which are adjacent to bridges. Before 1964, State 33 was signed as US 399 from Taft to Ventura.
