State Route 58 is a major cross-state route. Until 1964, 58 east of 99 was signed as US 466. West of 99 it was State 178. From I-15 to State 99, it is entirely four-lanes or more and has a great deal of truck traffic. The crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains can be quite treacherous in winter due to snow and ice. It is also very scenic route.

West of I-5, the route takes on a very different character. Instead of a busy corridor, it is quite the opposite, having one of the lowest traffic counts on any State Highway in California. Be mindful when crossing this section as there are few services along the route, one section having a 70 mile gap in services.
