Vermont Canyon Road
Built: Unknown – Possibly mid-1920’s
Location: Between East and West Observatory Road on Vermont Canyon Road in Griffith Park, Los Angeles.
This tunnel cuts off the short loop that passes the Griffith Observatory. It has also been used in a few movies, most notably as the “Tunnel to Toon Town” in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”.
Location: Top of Sepulveda Pass near Skirball Court, Los Angeles
Built: 1975 to 1982
Location: Between Truinfo Canyon Road and State Hwy 1
Three sets of tunnels, originally built as single tunnels, were constructed along Kanan-Dume Road during a period of road building funded partly as an “atomic warfare escape route” should Los Angeles be bombed. This, of course, never happened but the region still did benefit from these roadways. Most of the tunnels along Kanan-Dume road are one-lane wide and were twinned in the early 1980’s.
Location: One mile south of Piuma Road
The only tunnel along Malibu Canyon Road, it was built to help alleviate the need for a sharp curve along the roadway.
