US 99 / US 466 – Famoso – Jct US 466 West

1930 USGS map of Famoso showing the “new” and original alignment. The newer alignment, which is also where the current 99 runs, follows the red line to the left of the tracks.

At Famoso, US 99 splits with US 466. State Route 65 also used to meet here until the late 1940’s, when it was moved south to near Bakersfield. Portions of the original alignment remain, complete with wooden railing as well. In 1936, an underpass was constructed to allow for US 99 to pass under the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1958, an additional overpass was constructed when this section was upgraded to an expressway. In 1970, the 1936 underpass was replaced with a new overpass, creating the spread dual overpass arrangement that exists today.
